The Globe Public Library announces that the Media Bank is now fixed and DVDs are available for checkout.

You can check out 3 DVDs a day with a library card at no cost to you.

Centennial Band Swing Concert and Dance

A Centennial Band Swing Concert and Dance will take place on Saturday, April 12 at the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts.

Doors open at 6:30pm and the band will play from about 7:15 to 10:pm.

Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 26 year old Korwin Smith for aggravated assault, attempted aggravated assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50 year old John Farris for domestic violence/aggravated assault.

29 year old inmate Francisco Martinez was served a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct/domestic violence and assault.

Marathon Relay Runners Coming Through Globe-Miami

Marathon runners for the One Run to Boston Relay will be coming through Globe-Miami today.

The relay run started Sunday in Santa Monica, California and will continue all the way to Boston. So far $244,000 has been raised by 1600 runners.

A runner is expected to arrive at Top of the World around 10:am, where another runner will take the baton and run to Claypool. Another runner will go from there to Highway 60 and Fairgrounds Road. That runner should arrive around 12:50pm.

Clean Elections Financing Available to Candidates

The Citizens Clean Elections Commission reminds potential candidates that public financing is available to run for legislative and statewide offices in 2014.

Candidates are required to collect $5 qualifying contributions from registered voters. Participating candidates agree to strict spending limits and must attend required workshops and public debates.

The deadline to file as a candidate is May 28 and candidates have until August 19 to collect their $5 contributions.

So far, 79 candidates have expressed interest in using Clean Elections to run for office in 2014.

Copper Valley Relay for Life Kicks Off This Weekend

The Copper Valley Relay for Life season kicks off  this Saturday (March 22) from 10 until 2 at the Historic Train Depot in Globe.

There will be popcorn, prizes and carnival style fun for the whole family.

Cub Scout Pinewood Derby This Weekend

The 50^th Anniversary running of the Gila District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby will be held this Saturday (March 22) at the Miami High School Gym.

Adult Pinewood Derby alumni are invited to bring their old cars and race.

Registration begins at 8:am and racing starts at 9:30. There is a $4 fee for each car.

Car kits may be purchased by calling 520-404-6656. The kit contains all the parts necessary to build a winning race car.

Globe Library's Bookmark Contest

The Globe Public Library’s Bookmark Contest entries must be turned in by Tuesday, April 1.

The National Library Week 2014 theme is “Lives Change @ Your Library.”

Contest winners will receive gift certificates and will have their creation made into bookmarks that will be distributed at the library.

Amy Thompson of Globe passed away Tuesday at Heritage Healthcare Center. She was 93.

A graveside service for Amy Thompson will be held Sunday at 3:pm at East Resthaven Cemetery in Phoenix.

A Celebration of Amy’s Life will take place Monday at 2:pm at Dream Manor Inn.

Visitation for Lydia Valtierra is Monday at 9:am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after a domestic disturbance at Pinto Creek Mobile Home Park. 45 year old Teddy Cox and 47 year old Tammy Cox were both charged with disorderly conduct and domestic violence.

67 year old Wayne Schultz was arrested yesterday for assault/domestic violence.

21 year old Christopher Schultz was arrested yesterday for burglary.

28 year old Christopher Harper of Maryland was arrested for burglary and for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

Mesa Police arrested 21 year old Levi Hanon of Globe on a failure to appear warrant for disorderly conduct and domestic violence.

The Department of Public Safety arrested 30 year old Marissa Lopez of Globe on failure to comply warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Town of Miami Wastewater Advisoory Board meets today (Thursday) at 4:00 at the Miami Council Chambers.

Judge Duber Won't Seek Re-Election Because of 'Toxic and Confrontational Atmosphere'

Gila County Superior Court Judge Robert Duber has announced that he is not running for re-election because of “bullying” and “political self-interest” by the Gila County Attorney’s Office.

The Payson Roundup reports that there has been an increasingly bitter confrontation between the Superior Court judges and prosecutors working for Gila County Attorney Bradley Beauchamp. 

The newspaper reports that the dispute started with complaints by prosecutors that Judge Peter Cahill rejected some proposed plea bargains. The prosecutor’s office has been routinely requesting a new judge anytime a criminal case is assigned to Cahill, which means Judge Duber has been taking the majority of criminal cases. This has led to a huge backlog.

Judge Duber also told the Roundup that the current county prosecutor’s office has skirted the the ethical edge when it comes to key rules—like disclosing evidence.

Duber says that in his 28 years on the bench, he has never encountered such a toxic and confrontational atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Gila County Attorney Shawn Fuller faces charges filed by the State Bar disciplinary council for a series of incidents in which he walked out of the court in a dispute with Judge Cahill or interrupted defense attorneys. Fuller has apologized to Judge Cahill.

Sgt. Manuel Mendoza Awarded Medal of Honor

Staff Sgt. Manuel Mendoza was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor yesterday (Tuesday) by President Obama.

Sgt. Mendoza was born in Miami, AZ. He was nicknamed the “Arizona Kid.” He was given the Distinguished Service Cross for courageous actions during combat operations on Mount Battaglia, Italy, on October 4, 1944.
