New Program Tackles Diabetes Among Young American Indians

A special curriculum to tackle the growing prevalence of diabetes among American Indian children has been developed by health officials, tribal leaders and educators from across the country.

Officials with the national Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools project say prevention starts in the classroom. Now teachers who work with Native American students can incorporate the program into their lessons this fall.

ABC15 reports that a handful of educators are being trained in Albuquerque this week to introduce the program to schools throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and Utah.
